The internet can be a very useful tool for the classroom teacher. With it, the teacher can find multiple lessons, activity ideas, interactive online activities, as well as pictures and information for almost any subject the class might be interested in or in the process of researching. The internet could be a way to introduce different types of music, different languages, images of works of art students might not otherwise see. There are virtual fieldtrips that can be taken online. There are online museums and paint galleries and all sorts of educational topics that can be used.
The internet has many tools that can be used for allowing the students to research. Creating web-quests is a brilliant idea for directing students’ research as it both cuts down on the time spent searching for good and reliable sources and information and it cuts down on the possibility of students finding inappropriate material.
Some disadvantages to using the internet is the vast selection of information that can be found. It is sometimes very difficult to tell what information is good information and what is bad or unfounded. It can be difficult to cite information found on the internet.
Also, a concern for working on the internet is the potential of running into inappropriate and simply bad material. This should be a concern for not only students, but also the teachers.
Overall, the pros outnumber the cons to using the internet in the classroom. If used carefully and wisely, it can be a very powerful tool for teaching.
